Started One Piece on the 22 August 2021While at first I found the manga to be simply okay， the more I read， the more I grew to like it and while I found the first few arcs to be generic shounen （2 to 3 stars worthy）， the Baroque Works arc was absolutely phenomenal and earned the current 5 stars！When it comes down to it， I think what makes this manga so good is that it has a lot of heart。 We are very far from say the depressing grimdark edginess of Attack on Titan。 However， I would say the story Started One Piece on the 22 August 2021While at first I found the manga to be simply okay， the more I read， the more I grew to like it and while I found the first few arcs to be generic shounen （2 to 3 stars worthy）， the Baroque Works arc was absolutely phenomenal and earned the current 5 stars！When it comes down to it， I think what makes this manga so good is that it has a lot of heart。 We are very far from say the depressing grimdark edginess of Attack on Titan。 However， I would say the story is still as serious: it is about dreams and friendships and hope。It is genuinely fun， funny and moving and the art is surprisingly good （I did have some misconceptions due to the anime figure sticks but in truth the author is a great artist: hello Zoro， Smoker， Crocodile etc）。I also have to highlight the absolute craft of the author who is clearly a master at his work。 He strikes perfect balance with his characters that are so colourful and camp while not totally ridiculous; the stuff he comes up with is terribly imaginative and charming， be it the powers， animals like the bowing bear （my absolute favourite）， the world or the characters。。。I can see how this shaped all the other shounens after it but， based on what I've read， no other manga have been able to totally recapture the surprising magic that is cast here。 I， myself， can't really put my finger on what makes this work so appealing。The manga is far from perfect and riddled with what are now generic anime tropes but in the end it's damn enjoyable！ A very lighthearted read that pulses with optimism and hope。。。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 I finally decided to reread One Piece from the beginning in color。 My rating is completely pointless， though， as I've been reading One Piece since I was 9 and I still think it's a masterpiece。Although I always hear that the beginning is pretty rough to reread， I actually enjoyed most of this a lot。 I will be honest and say I skipped Coby and Alvida's introductions， cause I've read those chapters so many times and I'm not a big fan of them。 I think Zoro's introduction is spectacular， though。 Sets I finally decided to reread One Piece from the beginning in color。 My rating is completely pointless， though， as I've been reading One Piece since I was 9 and I still think it's a masterpiece。Although I always hear that the beginning is pretty rough to reread， I actually enjoyed most of this a lot。 I will be honest and say I skipped Coby and Alvida's introductions， cause I've read those chapters so many times and I'm not a big fan of them。 I think Zoro's introduction is spectacular， though。 Sets up Coby and Helmeppo casually， the Marines as a if not corrupt then definitely doubtful organization and Zoro as an absolute badass。 Buggy and Nami introduction is awesome as well。 Luffy shows off and Zoro is still insane。 Buggy + Luffy is always great and Nami is pretty cool， but doesn't properly shine till Arlong's Palace。 Usopp's introduction is fine， but Oda really went hard on that "Boy who cried wolf" comparison。 The Cat pirates are kinda cool， but quickly outshadowed。 Actually immediately with Sanji's introduction。 Not only does Zoro vs Mihawk really expand the world in a subtle but great way， but Luffy vs the Don is a great matchup really showing off how cowardly some pirates fight。 Although I think Arlong's Palace is where it all comes together。 Previous chapters has been good at rapidly expanding the crew but their battle vs the Fishmen pirates is where everyone gets a chance to shine and their comradery is truly put on blast。 It's also where Luffy gets his first bounty， setting in place a shounen classic: the power system。 Shown off with another short but world-expanding arc in Loguetown which is pretty great。 Finally the strawhats enter the grand line and meet Laboon （and vivi i guess） which is a really cute short arc that obviously has a special place in any fan's heart。 Sadly， though， this is where I think it all becomes sort of wobbly。 Baroque Works is a really interesting concept， but just like I remembered as a kid it goes on FOREVER！ I think it starts out pretty good with Whiskey Peak and Little Garden。 I like Vivi and the Luffy vs。 Zoro fight is incredible， but Mr。 3 and co is a pretty lackluster opponent。 Luckily Choppers introduction is kind of a step up。 I love Chopper， but I think Wapol is super annoying and not a threat at all， so the tension is really weird and it feels like Wapol should've been an enemy even before Arlong。 He's just not threatening at all。 Then comes what feels like 50 chapters of desert。 There are obviously also great moments like Ace's introduction （I would die for Ace） and Bon Clay is awesome but it goes on forever and everyone constantly has to yell at Vivi to chill the fuck out。 It's all just a sandy blur from there with fun character interactions being the only positive thing about it。 Thankfully the final fight vs B。W。 is pretty awesome and I like Luffy losing over and over again but Crocodile not bothering to properly finish him off because he underestimates him。 The fights aren't amazing， but they show off some of the less used strawhats pretty well。 I especially remember the Usopp and Chopper team-up fondly。 The ending is fine and I like Vivi staying in Alabasta not because she's completely useless but because having a character tag along for a while without needing to join the crew is a really good idea。 Especially cause this series relies really heavily on character interactions， so introducing nee people for the crew to interact with is always pleasant。Although I loved this reread， I'm reminded why I can never introduce anyone to One Piece。 The series is so consistently fun and the Characters are incredible， but I always laughing half because it's a great moment and half because it's like watching and old recording of you and your friends goofing around。 I wouldn't exactly call it nostalgia， it's more like I know these characters so well that I can predict their reactions to situations without being able to remember the specifics of a chapter。 I realize exactly when Luffy is about to say some stupid shit and I can immediately imagine how each crewmate will react to it。 Sometimes it'd hard to tell if I've just sunk so many hours into One Piece that my brain has tricked itself into thinking I'm loving it， but then I remember impatiently checking the library every week as a kid hoping new volumes had shown up or if the one I wanted to borrow again had been returned。 I've reread this story countless times already， but I know this will not be the final time。 1000+ chapters might seem like a lot， but if these first 200ish is supposed to be the weakest then the rest is doubtlessly a masterpiece。 。。。more

One Piece is a series that has truly amazing foresight and world building， Similar to the world building of Game of Thrones， Lord of The Rings， and Hunter X Hunter。 This world that our characters exist in is truly expansive， unlike Dragon Ball， Naruto， and Bleach。 You can tell that the author put his heart and soul into this fictional world， because longtime readers can see that not a single detail was missed or forgotten about。 Characters always seem to remain relevant no matter how long ago th One Piece is a series that has truly amazing foresight and world building， Similar to the world building of Game of Thrones， Lord of The Rings， and Hunter X Hunter。 This world that our characters exist in is truly expansive， unlike Dragon Ball， Naruto， and Bleach。 You can tell that the author put his heart and soul into this fictional world， because longtime readers can see that not a single detail was missed or forgotten about。 Characters always seem to remain relevant no matter how long ago they were introduced。 Tiny plot threads never get forgotten about， even when they appear to be throw away lines or filler dialogue。 If something unexplained pops up in a earlier story， it almost always gets picked back up at a much later date。 Up until One Piece I never experienced a manga writer who can think about the long term like this。 It is so rare and refreshing when a creator can weave/ knit tight plot threads like this， especially when most authors forget about their minor characters and make them irrelevant because they don’t care about consistency。 One of the reasons I love this kind of story telling is because it makes it feel like every plot thread matters。 Every adventure makes our heroes grow emotionally and physically。 And when we do reach the point where we are several adventures in， our main characters have changed in meaningful and powerful ways。 I love being along for the ride when a creator cares this much about his story telling。 。。。more

Right。 Usual criticism of Japanese Shonen Jump style applies （Rampant objectification of woman， models of romantic relationships replaced by ogling and crass flirtatious behaviour or stone cold indifference， Deus ex Machina is a Latin word but I'm certain the Japs invented the concept - the hero always has some extra strength against the villain despite prior evidence against that， moral codes replaced by simplistic/extremely idealistic models of being great at heart， and their world almost alwa Right。 Usual criticism of Japanese Shonen Jump style applies （Rampant objectification of woman， models of romantic relationships replaced by ogling and crass flirtatious behaviour or stone cold indifference， Deus ex Machina is a Latin word but I'm certain the Japs invented the concept - the hero always has some extra strength against the villain despite prior evidence against that， moral codes replaced by simplistic/extremely idealistic models of being great at heart， and their world almost always divided into neat compartments of good and evil） but that's also why the comic succeeds （watch me， I am going to be the King of Pirates says the protagonist in the first chapter， and is on a steady monotonic path to greatness till chapter 216， where this compilation ends）， and in doing so is probably comparable to the larger than life Disney movie superheroes of our times。 A note on style - while I initially thought that Oda's study of action movements is inferior to Toriyami's spectacularly neat Dragon Ball， I realised quite embarrassingly late that he has experimented with perspectives in intelligent ways， so a single action could probably be composed of 3 or 4 PoVs。 Manga is usually silly but One Piece tops its peers， and you can't help but grin at some panels。 While Dragon Ball's emphasis was almost entirely on strength， the characters in OP have some （ridiculous and） imaginative powers by virtue of 'Devil Fruits'。 Oda's other achievement is to have planned for an epic manga - by having his pirate protagonist sail along a great circle （'Grand Line'） the reader remains engaged in the journey， while the mangaka can create additional islands or routes to pace the journey as desired。 。。。more
